How to Get Your NJ Firearms ID Card: A Step-by-Step Guide

If you want to legally purchase a handgun or long gun in New Jersey, you'll need a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card — commonly called an FID card. The process can feel overwhelming at first, but it's straightforward once you know what to expect. Here's a step-by-step breakdown.

What Is an NJ FID Card?

A New Jersey Firearms Purchaser Identification Card (FPIC) is required to purchase rifles, shotguns, and ammunition in New Jersey. To purchase a handgun, you also need a separate Permit to Purchase a Handgun — but the FID card is the foundation of both.

Step 1: Gather Your Documents

Before you apply, you'll need to gather the following:

  • Valid New Jersey driver's license or state ID
  • Social Security number
  • Two references (non-family members) who are NJ residents
  • Mental health records release authorization (STS-33 form)
  • Consent for mental health records search (SP-66 form)

Step 2: Submit Your Application

Applications are submitted through the NJ FARS (Firearms Application and Registration System) online portal at njportal.com/NJSP/FARS. You'll create an account, complete the application, and pay the $5 fee online. Once submitted, your local police department will be notified to begin the background check process.

Step 3: Complete the Background Check

Your local police department will conduct a thorough background investigation. This includes a criminal history check, mental health records review, and contact with your references. By law, the process should take no more than 30 days — though in practice it can take longer depending on your municipality.

Step 4: Pick Up Your FID Card

Once approved, you'll receive a notification through the FARS portal. You'll pick up your FID card in person at your local police department. Bring a valid photo ID.

Do I Need a Safety Course?

New Jersey does not legally require a safety course to obtain an FID card. However, completing a certified Basic Pistol Safety course before you apply — or shortly after — is one of the best things you can do as a new gun owner. You'll learn the four fundamental rules of firearm safety, how to safely store your firearm at home, and how NJ law applies to your rights and responsibilities as a gun owner.
